Competent, capable, getting everything done.
And underneath, a body that has been holding a position for years.
I know that state from the inside.
Which is why my hands are slow.
I'm Avery.
I got into massage therapy in 2017, living in Kauai, at the recommendation of a coworker. I had already been on my own holistic journey, learning to connect with my body after going through topical steroid withdrawal.
I had no idea what direction bodywork would send me, or that my relationship with my own body and nervous system would end up being central to my healing.
Seven years later, that is still the thing I am most sure of.
I am a survivor of domestic violence.
I talk so much about freeze because as a mom of two kids, I could not afford to shut down. I had to find a way to keep moving.
But forcing myself through it was not working.
I homeschool my two kids. They have watched me build two businesses out of my own story and meet myself with gentleness in hard seasons.
Motherhood taught me that to nurture, we ourselves must be nurtured. I am the best mom when I am building support for me, and that ripples into them.
Creekside Sessions came from this part of my life more than the clinical part. When our brains hear birds chirping and running water, our bodies interpret it as safety, as a lack of predators. Water is healing. Women gathered at wells. I knew I wanted to take this work outside.
It is not that your jaw never clenches anymore, or that you always know what to make for dinner.
It is that you know how to slow down and support yourself when you do feel those things.
They feel less intense. Less existential. More like a small child needing care. Not a burden. Just something that needs tending to before you move on.
This work takes you to the edges
and grows your capacity for
so much joy and play.
I am humbled every time I step into a session, because what comes out of it is something I could never do alone.
I am still learning. I am currently enrolled with Somatic Experiencing International, and I keep going back to my own table, because this work reaches me the same way it reaches you.
